Vocabulary is one of the five essential components of comprehensive literacy instruction by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and is also part of the rule out criteria for determining the presence of a disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). However, what does evidence-based, intentional, systematic, and explicit instruction in vocabulary mean? How consistent is this understanding across grade levels? Is looking up words in a dictionary evidence-based, systematic, intentional, and explicit? The purpose of this session is to provide a clear understanding of how vocabulary can and should be taught with a focus on evidence-based methods that are systematic, intentional, and explicit across all grade levels and educational settings.
