The Reading League South Carolina, 2nd Saturday Series Spotlight School - Susie Horger Brennen Elementary- April 12th 9-10 a.m. Event Date:  April 12, 2025 Event Time:  9:00 -10:00 AM EST Location: Virtual Registration: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/36de4f19-8242-4e40-a89b-f24d4f0ff57f Description:  Come join Susie Horger, reading interventionist at Brennen Elementary in Columbia, SC. She will discuss Brennen's commitment to evidence-based literacy practices through Project Read. Starting with systematic phonics, they expanded to include the explicit writing program "Framing Your Thoughts." In the last two years, 85% of teachers were trained in IMSE's Orton Gillingham curricula. Simultaneously, they underwent LETRS training, leading to rich data-driven discussions and progress monitoring. Upper grades focus on morphology, with vertical articulation meetings to refine the scope and sequence. Brennen's dedication to the Science of Reading and professional development has been key to their success in improving student outcomes. #trlsc #sor #scienceofreading #literacy

However, what does evidence-based, intentional, systematic, and explicit instruction in vocabulary mean? How consistent is this understanding across grade levels? Is looking up words in a dictionary evidence-based, systematic, intentional, and explicit? The purpose of this session is to provide a clear understanding of how vocabulary can and should be taught with a focus on evidence-based methods that are systematic, intentional, and explicit across all grade levels and educational settings.
